Urban Urgencies Rio – Berlin – Bilingual Publication

We are happy to announce our participation in the editorial board of the bilingual publication Urgencias Urbanas – Urbane Dringlichkeiten Rio de Janeiro – Berlin.

Arte & Ensaios is a magazine published by the Visual Arts Postgraduate Programme of the Fine Arts School at the Federal University of Rio de Janeir (UFRJ). The present 26th edition is a result of cross-disciplinary and transcontinental academic collaboration with the Berlin Weissensee School of Art. The process started with a visit from artist and curator Robin Resch (Artoholics) to our weekly editing committee meeting in Rio in March 2012 when we discussed common interests and thematic intersections. Since the magazine editors invited Resch to co-edit the magazine, this resulted in the choice of the theme for our special bilingual issue: Urban Urgencies.

The purpose of our work was to gather, outline and compare, through very different theoretical and practical layers, both social and aesthetic issues of Rio de Janeiro and Berlin. The German Year of Science in Brazil 2013-2014 is a great opportunity to launch this publication that has emerged against the background of a praxeological turn within the humanities and its increasing globalized network of knowledge that has encouraged artistic practices within the public domain, developed for specific local contexts as site-related and discourse-orientated projects. Throughout an on going discussion and exchange between leading academics, artists, curators and thinkers, Urban Urgencies links art theory and practice and illustrates how the issue is addressed by its very different contributors.

we would like to thank all the authors, our production team, translators and everybody else who has contributed to this project. Specially, we would like to give our very special thanks to the German Year of Science in Brazil 2013-2014 (www.alemanha-brasil.org) and the German Center of Science and Innovation (DWIH-SP) – Wissenschaftssäule des Jahres „Deutschland + Brasilien 2013-2014” for their generous support that made this project possible. We would also like to thank Capes (Coordination for the Improvement of Pessoal Higher Education Personnel) and CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) for their support on this special issue. Furthermore, we express our gratitude to the Mart Stam Society – the Berlin Weissensee School of Art’s Friends and Patrons Association, the German Academic Exchange Service e.V. (DAAD) and the Goethe Institut.
